The story behind INTI Knitwear
But what is the story behind this label? In 1993, Leon and Anna set off on a journey to South America as adventurous backpackers. It was love at first sight: the continent stole their hearts with its stunning natural beauty, colourful culture and hospitable people. They never left. Over the course of thirty years, they created not only a fashion label, but also a knitting family and a workshop in Otavalo where the knitters come together to work, socialise and eat together.

With the colder months approaching, it’s lovely to keep warm in INTI Knitwear’s timeless handmade garments. Each item is carefully knitted by one of the knitters from the INTI knitting family, meaning you can feel their passion for the craft in every detail. All items are made from sustainable alpaca wool. This type of wool is known for not causing skin irritation, making it suitable for anyone with sensitive skin. To ensure your scarf, jumper or throw lasts for years to come, we recommend treating each piece with care. Always wash alpaca wool gently by hand, using cold water and a mild detergent. Then leave the garment to dry on a towel.

The team consists of 700 knitters and is closely involved in every step of the process, from the design phase to the dyeing and knitting of the wool and the distribution of our products. INTI focuses on items that are handmade with respect for nature and people. Stitch by stitch, each piece is lovingly crafted from natural materials, using two needles, by local knitters working from home. For us, this is the essence of socially sustainable fashion.
