Tongasoa-Artisanal is a company dedicated to promoting Malagasy craftsmanship through the manufacturing and wholesale of bags, baskets, and hats handmade by talented artisans in Madagascar. Founded in 2005 by Baptistine, a young entrepreneur of Malagasy origin who arrived in France at the age of 25, the brand aims to promote the unique know-how of her native country, while favoring an eco-responsible and fair trade approach.
Driven by a desire to create a positive impact, Baptistine established manufacturing workshops on the island, enabling numerous local artisans to work under fair and sustainable conditions. This initiative has enabled Tongasoa-Artisanal to meet growing demand in French and European markets while ensuring stable employment for Madagascar's artisans. The use of raffia, a supple and highly durable natural fiber, plays a central role in the making of its bags and hats. Harvested locally, raffia is an abundant and environmentally friendly resource. Once processed, this fiber is carefully transformed in the workshops using the crochet technique, a traditional Malagasy weaving method that requires skill and patience. Crochet allows for the creation of unique pieces that are lightweight, durable, and supple, distinguished by their textures and authentic charm.
